Ashwagandha vs Curcumin for Anxiety

Ashwagandha is the clear winner for anxiety based on current evidence.

12 RCTs with 1,002 people found ashwagandha produces a large effect on anxiety scores (SMD = -1.55, Grade A). The effect size dwarfs curcumin’s. Both KSM-66 and Sensoril extracts showed benefits at 300-600mg daily.

Curcumin has a small but real anxiolytic effect (SMD = -0.22, 7 RCTs, Grade B). But those 7 studies tested curcumin in people with chronic diseases, not people with primary anxiety disorders. The WFSBP/CANMAT guidelines say there isn’t enough evidence for curcumin as an anxiety treatment.

Curcumin’s real strength is anti-inflammatory. If anxiety is your primary concern, ashwagandha has much better data behind it. If you’re dealing with inflammation and joint pain with some anxiety on the side, curcumin might help both. Talk to your doctor about what fits your situation.
